Chinese folklore tells of a man who lives in a mountain and possesses the ability to transform into a white tiger. His name is Meng Jiangnu, or Meng WuYi as he is called in China, and he is China's most famous hermit. The legend of Meng Jiangnu has been translated into many forms across different cultures, most notably through Chinese opera and Japanese theater. The character of Meng Jiangnu was introduced into other cultures, however, with adaptations being made to give the personage a more familiar facet. This form of Meng Jiangnu is the most popular throughout China and other countries in East Asia. Meng Jiangnu was first introduced into other cultures through Chinese opera. During this time he was known as Duan Yu. His origins are debated, but it is believed that he was a knight who became a hermit after being defeated by his enemies for his refusal to cede power. He retreated to the mountains where he lived for thirty years, until he became hungry and decided to eat human offerings sent to his mountain by people who sought him out . He would be exposed and executed for his crimes. Meng Jiangnu has been adapted into other cultures as well, with theatrical adaptations of the legend appearing in various countries, such as Thailand and Japan. In Japan his name became changed to Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) and he became known as a hermit for his ability to easily survive the harsh mountain life. The origin of this version differs from that of China, with no mention of him receiving human offerings. In Thailand, Meng Jiangnu was first introduced as a character in a Thai opera called "Krung Sri Ratchakanok Intarachute Dong Phra Barami". In this form, he was known as Phra Kaew from the Thai name of Mount Baramtarn. His origins were different from those in China. In this version, Phra Kaew was a commoner who found a magic sword in the mountains and used it to become a mighty warrior. He then built a temple on top of a mountain that became his permanent home after being defeated by an enemy. Meng Jiangnu is a main character in the movie Shaolin Temple released in 2003, starring Cheng Pei Pei and David Carradine. In this adaptation, he is known as Meng Wu Yi and is portrayed by Zhang Hanyu from China's Shaolin Temple Dance Company. Meng Wu Yi is the central character in the 2009 martial arts film, "Mountain Raiders". This film follows a group of men who attempt to rob the Shaolin Temple. His origins are similar to those in Thailand and Japan, with his having lived on an isolated mountain and possessing the ability to transform into a white tiger. cfa1e77820
